Pack-in-mini · Estrela · 1987

About

  • Publisher: Produced by Brinquedos Estrela under regional license from DC Comics (coordinated with Editora Abril)
  • Distribution: Packaged exclusively inside the bubble of carded Estrela Super Powers figures in Brazil (1986–1987)
  • Language: Portuguese
  • Dimensions: Scaled slightly smaller than standard US mini-comics to fit the localized card footprint

  • If you’re diving into the world of pack-in comic books, Estrela’s distribution approach is actually a super fun piece of toy history! If you already own the standard English Kenner mini-comics for Series 1 or Series 2 characters, you’re actually looking at the exact same layouts Estrela used for the Brazilian market—just with a localized twist.

For 14 of the core characters (Aquaman, Batman, Brainiac, Darkseid, Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Joker, Lex Luthor, Penguin, Robin, Superman, and Wonder Woman), Estrela did a direct, page-for-page Portuguese translation of Kenner’s original scripts, comic panels, and artwork. So if you have the English versions of these, you know exactly what Brazilian kids were reading back in the day!

The coolest part of the story, though, belongs to Cyborg, Plastic Man, and Shazam. Because of budget cuts, Kenner completely scrapped mini-comics by the time Series 3 hit US store shelves, meaning official English mini-comics for these three heroes don't even exist. But Estrela didn't want their domestic lineup to feel incomplete! They stepped up and produced wholly unique, Portuguese-exclusive "mini-gibi" comicsspecifically for them. It’s an awesome bonus for international completionists, while the other 14 legacy characters—including our man Superman—stayed identical to their US counterparts, shifted only by language and local paper stock.

  • Technical Notes:
    • Paper Variance: While Kenner mini-comics utilized a standard semi-gloss cover with newsprint interior pages, Estrela's mini-gibis were printed on a thicker, completely matte bond paper stock local to Brazilian printing presses of the mid-1980s.
    • Color Registration: The color separation on the Estrela mini-comics frequently shows slight misalignment or softer, bleeding ink profiles compared to the sharper domestic US print runs.
    • Survival Rate: These mini-comics are exceptionally scarce in the modern secondary market. Because the matte paper stock was highly absorbent, surviving copies are frequently found with heavy moisture staining, ink fading, or tearing along the spine.
    • Archivist Note: A loose Estrela Superman is rarely found with its original Brazilian mini-comic intact; finding a copy completely free of spine splits or localized "foxing" (aging spots) warrants a premium collector grade.
