About
The Hero Initiative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to comic book creators in need. Founded in 2000, it was the first federally chartered not-for-profit corporation devoted specifically to helping comic book creators, providing assistance with medical expenses, essential living costs, and other emergency needs.
In 2024, the Hero Initiative released a special officially licensed Super Powers poster featuring classic DC artwork by José Luis García-López. The print debuted at C2E2 in Chicago, April 26–28, 2024, where García-López appeared as a guest of the Hero Initiative at booth #1575. Limited to only 200 signed prints, the poster was created using artwork originally produced for the legendary 1982 DC Comics Style Guide.
García-López’s Style Guide established a remarkably consistent visual identity for DC’s characters during the 1980s. Much of the artwork was inked by Dick Giordano and created for use throughout DC’s licensing program, appearing on merchandise, advertising, packaging, promotional material, and countless other products. Its unmistakable depictions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and the wider DC Universe helped define how these characters were presented to an entire generation.
The Hero Initiative Super Powers poster brings that classic Style Guide artwork together under the Super Powers banner, giving the release particular significance for collectors of Kenner’s 1984–1986 Super Powers Collection and 1980s DC merchandise. Its debut alongside García-López at C2E2 further connects the print to the artist whose work helped shape the visual identity of the era. With only 200 signed examples produced, the poster stands as a limited modern tribute to the artwork associated with Super Powers while also supporting the Hero Initiative’s work assisting comic book creators in need.
