Wonder Woman

Kenner Super Powers Collection · Series 1 · 1984

Overview

The legendary Amazonian princess and foundational female heroine of the line, armed with her Magic Lasso and bullet-deflecting protective bracer movements.

Wonder Woman was the sole female figure in the entire Kenner Super Powers Collection, which alone makes her a notable piece of 1980s action figure history. The sculpt renders the Amazon warrior in her classic red, blue and gold costume, drawn straight from the DC style guide. Her Power Action Deflector Bracelets feature is triggered by squeezing her legs together, crossing her forearms in front of her chest in the character's signature bullet-deflecting pose. Because she was packed in lighter ratios than the core male heroes, complete loose examples with her lasso intact are meaningfully harder to assemble than Superman or Batman.

Wonder Woman came with a golden lasso made of thread wrapped with coiled gold plastic designed to be held in her hand or hung at her hip. It is the single most commonly lost accessory from the first wave.

A 16-page full-color mini-comic shipped with every carded example.

Notes

The lasso is small, thin and easily mistaken for generic loose string in a toy bin. Reproductions exist and tend to have crisper coil detail and a slightly different gold tone than the original vintage part.

As the only female figure in the line, carded Wonder Woman examples with an undisturbed comic draw strong collector interest.

Shell gas stations in Canada ran a promotion resulting in the release of eight characters, including Wonder Woman, on slim blister cards, without mini-comic, in 1985. Consumers were afforded the opportunity to purchase one of eight specially carded Super Powers action figures with a fill-up of 25 liters (litres) or more for $1.99 (CAN). Eight figures were released on slim cards, including: Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Red Tornado, Martian Manhunter, Firestorm.

Overall the 1st series characters tend to show up carded on the collector's market in higher quantities than the 2nd series characters, however assembling a complete set is fairly easy. Larger quantities of the more well known 1st series characters were likely produced, explaining their higher abundance. Collectors have documented finding these slim cards at closeout retail stores like Kay Bee Toys (Playland) and Tuesday Morning. It is widely believed Kenner created this narrow profile to easily fit store checkout lanes, stocking stuffers, or specialized international promotional displays.
