Alex Saviuk is a veteran American comic book artist born on August 17, 1952, whose clean, dynamic storytelling style has defined iconic characters across both DC Comics and Marvel Comics for nearly five decades. He is highly regarded for his lengthy runs on Spider-Man titles and his foundational 1980s illustrative work for Kenner's legendary Super Powers Collection.
Biography
Early Career and DC Comics (1977–1986)
Saviuk graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 1974, where he studied under the legendary comic master Will Eisner. He began his professional career at DC Comics in 1977.
Key Titles: He quickly established himself as a definitive artist for Green Lantern and The Flash. Notably, he drew The Flash #275 (1979), the historic issue featuring the death of Iris West.
Backup Features: Throughout the early 1980s, Saviuk was the regular backup artist for Action Comics, illustrating the adventures of Aquaman, the Atom, and Air Wave.
The Kenner Super Powers Era (1984–1986)
When Kenner was awarded the DC toy license, they utilized the iconic 1982 DC Comics Style Guide by José Luis García-López. However, additional specific art was heavily required to expand the brand. Saviuk was brought in as a primary character artist for the global toy phenomenon.
Packaging Art: He delivered crucial spot illustrations and character artwork for the action figure blister cards and boxes across all three waves of the toy line.
Included Mini-Comics: Saviuk packed intense, classic hero action into a small format by drawing many of the promotional mini-comics packaged directly with individual action figures.
Legacy and 40th Anniversary Return
In late 2024, DC Comics celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Kenner toy line. To recreate an authentic retro experience, DC brought back Saviuk to draw a series of Super Powers anniversary variant covers alongside designer Jason Geyer. The project featured "what-if" unreleased figures designed completely in the signature 1980s packaging style that Saviuk had originally helped establish.
