Bill Finger

Creator of Batman · 1914–1974

The unsung architectural genius of Gotham who transformed a rough sketch into the world’s most iconic dark vigilante.

Biography

If Bob Kane provided the spark for Batman, writer Bill Finger gave the hero his soul and iconic look. When Kane showed him the initial red-suited design, Finger instantly recognized how to elevate it, suggesting a stealthy black-and-grey color scheme, replacing the simple mask with a horned cowl, and swapping the stiff wings for a flowing, scalloped cape. Finger went on to script the character's debut in Detective Comics #27, constructing a moody, pulp-inspired atmosphere that defined the world of Gotham City. Over the following years, Finger’s typewriter turned out the foundational building blocks of the entire mythos, as he single-handedly created the origin story of Bruce Wayne, coined the name Gotham City, and co-created legendary figures like Robin, the Joker, and Catwoman. For the world of toys and merchandising, Finger was the ultimate architect, inventing the Batmobile, the Batcave, and the gadget-filled utility belt. His brilliant imagination provided a rich, endless sandbox of vehicles and accessories that would inspire generations of action figures and playsets.
